What we heard: Settlement National Survey

July 21, 2025

From July to September 2024, the Administrator gathered feedback from potential Class Members through a national survey to find out about their awareness and understanding of the First Nations Child and Family Services and Jordan’s Principle Settlement, and to learn about possible barriers to participating, how much support they would need and how they prefer to communicate.

The survey was conducted before extensive communications were released (e.g., advertising, social media), providing a benchmark for the design of subsequent communications.

The survey was conducted by Archipel Research & Consulting, an Indigenous-owned, independent research and consulting firm. The survey gathered insights from 2,258 people across the country—90 per cent of whom identified as First Nations.

Here are the highlights of the results.

  • Most respondents said they have some knowledge about the Settlement and believe they are eligible to submit a Claim but noted that they would need help with the Claims Process. Some said that they would likely get help from family members or through their community.
  • Participants said that they expect to face some challenges with the Claims Process, including understanding submission requirements, finding and completing the Claim Form and not having enough time to submit a Claim.
  • Many participants said they prefer to access information about the Settlement through the Settlement website, followed by First Nations government organizations and through social media. However, the majority said that they prefer to receive information through email.

These findings help guide how the Administrator shares information about the Settlement and Claims Process, with the goal of addressing the needs of Class Members as they submit their Claims for compensation.
